Root Baby & Blanket, 2021

Blanket: Wool Cloth, thread & words, 100 x 80 x 0.3cm

Root Baby: polyester tights, polymorph plastic, latex, cotton fabric, 20 x 50 x 25cm

Root Baby was born from an imaginary place that was nurtured by the words of Rebecca Tamás and Clarice Lispecter. Their words led me to think about the ‘prick’ of the biological ‘urge to nurture’- instinctual and powerful - which in turn ‘stitches’ you into the collective experience of survival and existence. I began by playing with words that are common in needlecraft, the biological body (sex and birth) and horticulture.

After a 20yr career in filmmaking Abigail decided to embrace a lifelong ambition to study sculpture. In general her work centres around concepts and material substances that evoke abstracted impressions of life, death, transcendence, absence and presence – with a subplot to interrupt the habitual assumptions of our everyday, physical realities.
